One Method of Installation and Material List for Slim Jim® & Geo Lake Plate® Assembly

Assembly Application - Stainless Steel

The illustration shows one method of installing a Slim Jim® / Geo Lake Plate® assembly in a pond/lake cooling dominate (HR) application.
Assembly Application

Suggested list of items used for this type of installation:

  • (2) - 3” Butt Fusion 90º Elbow
  • (1) - 3” Flange Adapter Kit (available thru AWEB Supply) Transition from flange connection to HDPE pipe
  • (7) - Stabilizers - 6” sch 40 PVC pipe with PVC pipe caps glued in place (one above each plate)
  • (42) - Stainless Steel 300 T-Bolt Hose Clamp or Stainless Steel Screw Bands (6.75” OD) to attach each stabilizer to each handle1 location on the plate (two at each handle1 location is suggested)
  • Misc.
    • Rebar in workable lengths (used to overcome buoyancy of the HDPE pipe and allow the liquid filled HDPE pipe to sink to the bottom from the shore to the assembly)
    • Nylon wire ties (used to secure the rebar end-to-end to the HDPE pipe from the shore to within 10' of the assembly)

Stabilizers allow the Slim Jim® / Geo Lake Plate® assembly to float just beneath the surface of the water until placed into position for submerging. Once the assembly is positioned and flushing of the loop system has started, the stabilizer allows the assembly to slowly sink and stay vertical until it is resting on the floor of the body of water. The stabilizers are not removed after the installation is completed.

Note: The fluid flow from the Heat Pump equipment must enter the lowest connection on the Slim Jim® / Geo Lake Plate® assembly. The fluid flow returning to the Heat Pump equipment must exit the highest connection on the Slim Jim® / Geo Lake Plate® assembly. This will ensure any air remaining in the system will not be trapped in the Slim Jim® / Geo Lake Plate® assembly. For proper operation and maximum performance follow the Slim Jim® / Geo Lake Plate® assembly REQUIREMENTS FOR INSTALLATION.

FYI: Systems on any earth/lake loop in extreme conditions may call for auxiliary heat. When the return water to the unit is ≤32°F and the unit calls for auxiliary heat, the auxiliary heat should be designed to stay engaged until the thermostat is fully satisfied regardless of loop type. In most applications a relay will need to be added to keep the supplemental heat engaged until the thermostat(s) are fully satisfied. This will allow for down time and loop regeneration. Additional information may be obtained on this subject by contacting AWEB Supply.

1Multiple handles are standard on the Slim Jim® / Geo Lake Plate® . The handles are designed to support the empty weight of the plate only during handling and assembly. The handles are not designed for permanent suspension/hanging of the plate and may result in damage to the plate. Stainless Steel Hose Clamps or Stainless Steel Screw Bands can be used to attach the Stabilizer to the handles. Connecting the stabilizer to the handles will keep it vertical during its decent as the plate are flushed until the legs are resting on the floor of the body of water.

Coiled HDPE Piping Loop Systems

Comparison of HDPE and Slim Jim

A common method for geothermal heating and cooling applications is to use coiled HDPE piping to create a “loop” system. The coiled pipe is buried in the ground in some manner. The burial methods can be vertically in bored holes, horizontally in slinky loops, or even placed in an array in the bottom of a […]
